My fiancé and I are planning our honeymoon for late September and we are completely overwhelmed by the choices in Europe. We want a mix of romantic ambiance, great food, and some relaxing sights without being stuck in massive tourist crowds. We are currently debating between the Amalfi Coast, Santorini, or perhaps a road trip through the Swiss Alps, but we are open to other suggestions. What are your absolute favorite spots for a romantic European getaway during autumn?

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! Late September is honestly the absolute best time to visit the Amalfi Coast because a lot of the massive summer crowds finally start to thin out, though it can still be pricey. You should check out this guide on how much does a 2-week trip to Europe realistically cost in 2024 before finalizing your budget.

Santorini in late September is magical. The weather is still warm enough for swimming, but you can actually walk around Oia without getting swept away by cruise ship crowds. Highly recommend staying in Imerovigli for a more romantic, quiet vibe.

If you want to escape crowds completely, skip Amalfi and Santorini and head to the Azores in Portugal. It is breathtakingly romantic, full of hot springs, dramatic cliffs, and incredible food, plus it's very budget-friendly compared to Switzerland.

A Swiss Alps road trip in autumn is stunning, especially when the leaves start changing colors in the valleys. Just keep in mind that some high-altitude mountain passes might start getting chilly or closing down if an early snowstorm hits.

Have you considered the south of France? Provence in late September has wonderful weather, the grape harvest is happening so the vineyards are lively, and it's so much more relaxed than peak summer.

I went to Puglia in southern Italy last September for my honeymoon and it was perfection. Incredible food, gorgeous whitewashed towns, historic masserie to stay in, and hardly any tourists. Way less vertical stairs than Amalfi too!

Santorini sunsets are unbeatable, but honestly, the food in Italy blows Greece out of the water. If food is a priority for you two, definitely lean towards Italy or even Northern Spain like San Sebastian.

If you are worried about overall expenses for a longer honeymoon, you might want to look into what is the cheapest European country to visit in 2024 to help stretch your wedding budget further without sacrificing romance.

The Swiss Alps are gorgeous, but driving through winding mountain roads can sometimes cause stress rather than relaxation on a honeymoon. If you choose Switzerland, stick to the trains—they are so romantic and stress-free!

We did a split trip between Florence and the Tuscan countryside in late September and it was the dreamiest honeymoon ever. The weather was crisp in the evenings, perfect for drinking local Chianti outdoors.

Lake Como in late September is pure romance. Grand hotels, misty mornings, beautiful boat rides, and amazing northern Italian cuisine. It definitely beats the overwhelming tourist chaos of Santorini.

If you want something a bit different and less cliché, consider the Dolomites in Italy. You get the majestic mountain views of the Swiss Alps combined with incredible Italian food and wine.

Late September is also a great time for shorter European trips if you are adding this onto a destination wedding. You might find some inspiration in these best European cities for a weekend getaway if you want to tack on a quick city stop.

Santorini can be very windy in late September, which surprised us when we went. The views are iconic, but I think Amalfi offers a much cozier, romantic atmosphere for walking hand-in-hand through lemon groves.

Go with the Swiss Alps! Renting a cozy chalet with a hot tub overlooking the mountains while sipping hot chocolate or local wine after a crisp autumn hike is the ultimate way to decompress after wedding planning.
