Top European destinations for winter sun

I am looking to escape the gloomy and freezing weather in Northern Europe for a week or two this coming January. Can anyone recommend some great spots within Europe where I can actually get some warm sunshine and decent beach weather without having to fly long-haul? I was considering the Canary Islands or maybe southern Spain, but I'm open to other hidden gems in the Mediterranean as well.

The Canary Islands are definitely your best bet for actual beach weather in January. Tenerife or Gran Canaria stay around 22-24°C, which is warm enough for the beach, though the Atlantic is a bit brisk!

If you want to keep costs down while chasing the sun, check out southern Spain, especially Malaga or Almeria. It might not be hot enough for sunbathing every day, but it beats the northern freeze.

Cyprus is a hidden gem for winter sun in the Mediterranean. Paphos and Limassol get plenty of sunny days in January, and it's much warmer than mainland Greece or Italy during that time.

Antalya in Turkey is technically part of the wider European travel sphere and gets lovely mild winter days. You won't be swimming, but you can definitely sit outside in a t-shirt.

Madeira is another fantastic Portuguese option alongside the Canaries. It's lush, green, and Funchal gets some great microclimates with warm winter sun.

If you decide on southern Spain, Seville and the Costa de la Luz are gorgeous in January. Just keep in mind that once the sun goes down, it gets quite chilly.
