Essential packing list for a 2-week winter trip to Central Europe?

Hey everyone! My partner and I are heading to Germany, Austria, and Prague this coming January, and we are starting to panic a bit about what to pack. We want to travel carry-on only, but we are worried about staying warm in freezing temperatures and snow without bringing massive coats. What are your absolute must-have items, clothing brands, or layering strategies for surviving a European winter? Any advice on footwear that is both waterproof and city-walking approved would also be amazing!

Don't panic! Carry-on only in winter is totally doable if you master the art of merino wool base layers. They keep you super warm without adding bulk.

For footwear, I swear by Blundstone thermal boots with some thick wool socks. They are waterproof, incredibly comfortable for walking miles on cobblestones, and look decent in city restaurants.
Layering is key! Pack 2 pairs of thermal leggings, 3 merino long-sleeve tops, a fleece or wool sweater, and a windproof down jacket. Wear your heaviest boots and coat on the plane.

Don't bother bringing umbrellas; buy a cheap compact windproof umbrella there or just wear a good rain-resistant outer shell. Prague gets very windy in January!

Merino wool is your best friend. Brands like Icebreaker or Smartwool are pricey, but you can wear their tops for three days straight without any odor, which saves so much luggage space.

Pack a lightweight daypack as your personal item. You'll need it for carrying your layers, a thermos of tea, and souvenirs as you explore the Christmas markets that linger or winter festivals.

If you are worried about costs adding up, you should definitely read up on how to travel Europe on a budget to save some cash for all the glühwein and trdelník you'll be eating!

For boots, Sorel makes amazing waterproof city boots that don't look like heavy hiking gear. Just make sure to break them in before you leave!

Bring a compact moisturizing cream and lip balm. The combination of freezing outdoor air and aggressive indoor heating in German and Austrian cafes will wreck your skin.

Pack clothes in packing cubes and roll everything tightly. Wear your bulkiest puffer jacket on the flight so it doesn't take up precious space in your carry-on roller bag.

Remember that Europeans dress pretty neutrally in winter. Think blacks, greys, camels, and navies. If you want to blend in, leave the neon ski jackets at home.

Grab a pair of touch-screen compatible gloves. Taking your bare hands out in minus-zero weather in Prague to check Google Maps is absolute torture!
