Bucket-list castles in Europe that actually live up to the hype?

I am planning a three-week backpacking trip across Europe for next spring and I want to dedicate a good portion of it to exploring historic castles. There are so many famous ones out there, but I am worried some might be overly touristy traps with nothing much to see inside. Which castles in Europe do you genuinely think are absolute must-visits for their architecture, history, and overall atmosphere? I would love to hear your top recommendations and any tips you have for avoiding the massive crowds.

Neuschwanstein is definitely touristy, but if you go for the first morning tour, it still takes your breath away. Also, check out this guide for first-timers to help map out your broader route around Germany and Austria.

You cannot miss Eltz Castle (Burg Eltz) in Germany. Unlike Neuschwanstein, it's still owned by the same family and hidden away in a forest, so it feels genuinely medieval inside. If you are trying to keep costs down while backpacking, read these budget travel tips.

Edinburgh Castle is amazing, but the crowds are relentless. Go right when the gates open at 9:30 AM and head straight for the Honours of Scotland before the tour groups flood the crown room.

Malbork Castle in Poland is the largest castle in the world by land area and absolutely blows people away. It's massive, heavily fortified, and a fraction of the price and crowds compared to French or German castles.

Château de Chambord in the Loire Valley is architectural perfection. The double-helix staircase alone is worth the trip. To dodge the worst of the crowds, rent a bike in the nearby town and arrive via the back forest trails.

Prague Castle is huge, but it can feel a bit like a theme park by midday. My advice is to buy your tickets online the day before and explore the Golden Lane just before closing time when everyone else has left for dinner.
