Best wine regions in Europe to explore for a 2-week trip?

My partner and I are planning a two-week vacation next autumn and we want to center the entire trip around wine tasting and vineyard tours. We've already done Tuscany a few years ago, so we're looking to explore a different part of Europe this time. Should we stick to the classics like Bordeaux and Burgundy, or venture out to places like the Douro Valley in Portugal or the Wachau in Austria? We'd love recommendations that combine great wine, fantastic local food, and manageable driving distances.

If you loved Tuscany, you should definitely look into the Douro Valley in Portugal! The terraced vineyards dropping down into the river are breathtaking in autumn. Plus, if you are planning to rent a car, make sure to read up on renting a car and driving in Europe because the roads along the river can get quite narrow and winding.

Burgundy is incredible, but autumn can sometimes bring chillier, rainier weather. Still, the Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays paired with local beef bourguignon are unbeatable.

I would recommend splitting your two weeks between the Douro Valley and Vinho Verde/Minho region. Porto is an amazing starting point, the food is world-class, and driving distances up north are very manageable.

Don't sleep on the Wachau Valley in Austria! Renting a car in Vienna and driving out along the Danube is so easy. The Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners are out of this world, and the autumn foliage makes the terraced vineyards glow golden.

Bordeaux is amazing, but it can feel quite spread out if you want to see both the Left and Right Banks. If you want something more compact with incredible food, consider Piedmont in Italy. It's close enough to Tuscany in vibe, but entirely unique with Barolo and white truffles in the fall!

For autumn, Portugal is hands down the best choice. The grape harvest happens in September and October, so the energy in the Douro Valley is electric. Just be sure to pack layers, as evenings get surprisingly crisp.

If you go to Bordeaux, base yourselves in St. Émilion. It's a gorgeous medieval village surrounded by vineyards, and you can easily walk or do very short drives to phenomenal châteaux.

The Wachau is fantastic for a shorter portion of a trip, but for a full two weeks, you might want to combine it with Slovenia's Goriška Brda or even cross over into the Tokaj region in Hungary.

Rioja in Spain is another brilliant option for a two-week autumn road trip. The wine is phenomenal, the pintxos in San Sebastián or Logroño are legendary, and the highways are modern and easy to navigate.

Burgundy has the best wine culture in the world, in my opinion, but it lacks the dramatic mountain or river scenery of the Douro or Wachau. The vineyards are mostly flat slopes of limestone.

Since you mentioned manageable driving distances, the Douro Valley paired with coastal Portugal is great, but watch out for tolls. Make sure your rental car has an electronic toll transponder!

Don't forget Alsace! Autumn is grape harvest season there too. The fairytale villages, stunning Riesling, and incredible French-German fusion food make it one of the most romantic places in Europe.

If you decide to venture to Austria's Wachau, you can easily combine it with exploring Styria, known as Austria's Tuscany. The wine and pumpkin seed oil specialties are to die for.

Bordeaux paired with the Loire Valley makes for an easy two-week itinerary. The châteaux are stunning, the wines range from crisp Sauvignon Blancs to earthy Cab Francs, and the driving is very straightforward.
