Best Christmas markets in Europe for a festive trip?

My partner and I are planning a winter getaway this December and want to experience the best traditional Christmas markets in Europe. We are hoping to visit a couple of cities that offer great food, artisan crafts, and an incredible festive atmosphere without being overly overwhelming. Which cities or specific markets would you recommend for a first-timer, and how many days should we plan to stay in each place?

My absolute top recommendation for a first-timer is Strasbourg, France! It is literally called the Capital of Christmas and the atmosphere is just magical. I suggest staying for about 3 to 4 days so you can explore all the different market squares without rushing. The food is incredible, especially the bredele and mulled wine.

If you want something traditional yet manageable, definitely look into Nuremberg, Germany. The Christkindlesmarkt has been around for centuries, and the gingerbread is out of this world. You only need about 2 or 3 days here to fully soak it in and enjoy the artisan crafts.

Vienna is fantastic in December. There are multiple markets scattered around the city, like the huge one in front of City Hall. It feels very romantic for a couple's getaway. Plan for 4 days here because there is so much imperial history to see alongside the festive stalls.

Salzburg in Austria feels like stepping right into a fairytale, especially if it snows. The market right by the cathedral is stunning, traditional, and not nearly as overwhelming as some of the massive German ones. Spend 3 days there, and definitely take a day trip to the surrounding lakes.

Colmar in Alsace is smaller and even more intimate than Strasbourg. It feels like a living movie set with all the half-timbered houses decked out in lights. 2 days in Colmar combined with 2 days in Strasbourg makes the ultimate festive holiday.

Consider visiting Munich! The market at Marienplatz has a gorgeous backdrop, and the city has plenty of wonderful artisan crafts and traditional Bavarian food to keep you warm. Plan for 3 days to enjoy the main market and the smaller medieval Christmas market nearby.

Cologne is famous for its massive market right under the shadow of the colossal Gothic cathedral. The atmosphere is bustling and so festive. 3 days is plenty to see Cologne and take a quick train over to Dusseldorf to check out their markets too.

Basel in Switzerland is often voted one of the best in Europe, and for good reason. It's incredibly clean, beautifully decorated, and very focused on high-quality artisan crafts rather than cheap souvenirs. Spend 3 days exploring Basel and enjoying Swiss raclette.

Tallinn in Estonia is a wonderful hidden gem if you want something a bit different with a high chance of snow. The medieval square sets a stunning backdrop for the market. 3 days is perfect for exploring the old town.
